Happy New Year!

As I rang in the New Year last winter, I wasn’t sure whether I could pull off life as a freelance journalist. By the end of January, though, I had turned down a steady, comfortable job in order to help launch a website (JD Careers Out There) and write a book. I also squeezed in a few freelance articles and filled in at Marketplace Morning Report for a month.

I feel extraordinarily blessed to have been given the opportunity to write about the Cristo Rey Network’s model of education. I’ve long admired the high schools, where low-income students work to earn their education, gaining valuable experience and ganas — the passionate desire to learn and grow.

In a way, the new year begins with as much uncertainty as the old, as I wrap up the book and look forward to new projects and opportunities. But like Cristo Rey students, I also know that with hard work and ganas, I will find my path.

Thanks to all those who have provided advice and support along the way. I hope that you find meaning, happiness and success on your journey in 2014 as well. Please stay in touch, and don’t be a stranger if you’re in LA.
